BMX - I Believe I Can Fly
When I was a kid I always wanted a BMX. I asked for one of these two wheeled wonders for every Christmas and every birthday. Unfortunately my family wasn’t particularly well off and I had to settle for a pre owned, black, re painted 5 gear racing bicycle.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and it became a treasured possession but I still couldn’t help covet a shiny new BMX! Having said that, after watching the movie E.T back in the early 80’s I also believed that if I had a BMX bike that I would be able to fly over my house on it! Years later, sailing over houses in a BMX videogame was scant consolation!
BMX was pretty much brand new in those days and the streets were full of kids buzzing up and down and making makeshift ramps to fly (fall off the end) off! Christmas mornings reflected just how popular BMX was becoming. In fact it had become an overnight roaring success.
One eyed Jimmy was the closest to ever achieve the magic feat of flying over the house on a BMX but as with every other attempt, the wall was the victor. However nobody could ever accuse those kids of not trying!
BMX bikes still cannot fly 30 years later but despite this fundamental flaw in their design, they have become more popular than ever before. The latest BMX triumph was their inclusion for the first time as a sport in the Olympic Games at Beijing during 2008.
The only discipline at the Olympics this time was racing although Freestyle is also massive and with its ever growing success is only a matter of time before these disciplines are considered also.
Flatland BMX riding is yet another style of riding that is growing in popularity and as with other forms of BMX discipline requires great skill to master.
Having such a mix of styles within the sport, perhaps it is not surprising to discover that there many, many different models of BMX bike. Each discipline is so different that it generally requires a bike specifically built for that purpose, with different weights and general designs to suit not only the discipline but also the individual riders.
With magazines and TV shows dedicated to the sport, BMX is enjoying fame and fortuned that it could have only have dreamed of back in the days of E.T and co!
With so much variety and choice out there, it shouldnt be a problem getting hold of the BMX bike you want, either for yourself or for a relative to unwrap on Christmas morning to once more go hurtling up the street, thrilled to bits with their new BMX.
While most experienced bikers don’t necessarily choose bicycle clothing for protection, there are times when an outer layer of protection will be quite welcome. For instance, mountain biking is thrilling and for riders at every level, very demanding. When inevitable fall happens, it would be nice to know that the shirt, shorts, etc. chosen for comfort and appearance are also durable enough to protect the rider from some scrapes and cuts. Fortunately, designers and manufacturers have taken this into account, using material for bicycle clothing that will provide some protection.
